San Francisco Wine Dinner

For this month's wine dinner we're bringing it a little bit closer to home. While many think of New York's little Italy or The North End in Boston as the hubs of Italy in America, it is actually San Francisco that is home to the oldest Italian restaurant in the U.S. With a climate that mirrors much of southern Italy and immediate access to fresh seafood, San Francisco offers some of America's closest comparisons to the old country alongside the uniquely San Franciscan.

What's uniquely San Franciscan, you ask? Our third course, Cioppino.

San Francisco sits at the southern edge of the wine region known as the North Coast, and the wines for our dinner hail from AVAs within it. Lean expressions of Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay from Lake County and Mendocino, and a light and zippy Mendocino Pinot Noir begin our evening. Sturdier Bordeaux and Rhone varietals grown in the warmer climes and (seemingly) eternal sunshine of Sonoma provide a bolder finish.

Chef Brian Rae and GM Alex Gang are excited to come home. Won't you join us?

Alto Adige Wine Dinner

Our third regional wine dinner of 2016 will stretch your perceptions of what Italian food is and can be.

Join us as we travel to Italy's northernmost clime, Alto Adige. This region of Italy, with its historical roots lying more in Austria and Germany than in the Mediterranean, features some of Italy's finest salumi, cheese, and of course dumplings!

As for the wine: Alto Adige is home to some well-known varietals (Pinot Grigio, Pinot Nero) and we'll be pouring fine alpine expressions of both. There will be a dry Moscato with the intense bouquet of a dessert wine but a sugar-free palate, a single vineyard low-yield Pinot Bianco, and an indigenous red varietal called Lagrein.

Chef Brian has created a wonderful menu to celebrate this amazing region. We can't wait to have you over for dinner.

Tuscan wine dinner with Montenidoli

On Tuesday December 8th, Centre Street Cafe invites you to a dinner celebrating the cuisine and wine of Tuscany. We’ll feature 5 wines from esteemed wine maker Elisabetta Fagiuoli of the Montenidoli estate. Montenidoli is set in the Tuscan countryside of San Gimignano, and the land Elisabetta harvests shows evidence of having been farmed for wine production by the Etruscans since the 3rd century BC.

Blanchard’s wine director John Paul Kaminga joins us to share his enthusiasm for the wines of Montenidoli, and Montenidoli’s Boston distributor Steven Chevalier will be along to curate the pairings.

Perticaia Wine Dinner

On Tuesday October 27th, Centre Street Cafe would like to invite you to our very first wine dinner. We’ll celebrate the wines of Umbria by enjoying 5 offerings from Perticaia, a winery known for keeping intact the rich history and traditions of the region. That means Trebbiano with body and strength, mouthwatering Sangiovese, dark and deep Sagrantino.

These wines will be paired over 4 courses, each dish rooted in the idea of “cucina povera”, or peasant cooking, for which the region is known. Cucina Povera doesn’t mean simple for simplicity’s sake; it means a celebration of freshness and of proximity to agriculture that invites simplicity: why get fancy with a just-picked squash? Fresh herbs abound, and olive oil drizzles at every opportunity.

Blanchard’s wine director John Paul Kaminga joins us to share his enthusiasm for Perticaia wines, and Perticaia’s Boston distributor Steven Chevalier will be along to curate the pairings.
